Now we will be doing a system resotre first. Not to worry all your documents and picture will be the same. We are simply taking your system back in time a bit. Go to the Windows start button and selletc "All Programs" > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Select "Restore my Computer to an earlier time". Now choose a restore date from a time you were not infected. For instance if you just got infected a week or so agao then choose a date that is 2 weeks back. Keep in mind that any software you installed after the restore date will no longer be installed. This is true for the vundo threat as well.
Your Computer will reboot and then after a minute or so you will get a prompt telling you that the system restore is complete. Now you need to go out and download the following programs. Vundofix
Spyware Doctor
Spybot Search and Destroy
Once they are download and saved to a location you will remember like your desktop reboot your computer and boot into safe mode with netowrking. To do this restart your computer and then on boot start pressing the F8 key every other second. you should see a dos like screen that has several options. The second one down form the top should be "Safe Mode with Networking". If the computer boots normal then you missed it and will have to try again. Once you have slected "Safe Mode with Networking" you will be asked if you want to continue booting or do a system restore. Select YES to continue booting.
Go ahead and install Spyware Doctor first. Install the program and be sure to update. Then imunize your computer. The scan will auto start. Stop the Scan. This is a must because we need to run the scan in safe mode and this program will be used last in the process. This is because the scan is free but to remove anything costs money for the program. We will only use this software to ensure the vundo threat is removed.
Now Run the Vundo Fix program. Select the Scan for Vundo option. The scan will take 20 minutes or so. Once done select all the files and hit the Remove button. You may be asked to re-boot if that is the case then say yes and go ahead and re-boot. Boot normal and let the scan run. You may not be asked this. If so just go to the next step. If you did end up having to re-boot then we need you to restart the computer again after that second scan and boot back into "Safe Mode with Networking"
Now Install Spybot search and Destroy. When asked to create a registry back up say yes and save the file to a location you will remember. When asked to update say yes and then after that go ahead and imunize your system. This will take a little while. After that run a full scan. Spybot will find many things on your system. Select the spywre traces and then hit the remove button. Spybot will tell you if it was able to remove them all. If it was not then it will ask to run on the next startup. go ahead and allow it if it asks.
Now boot into "Safe Mode" once all the above is done. Not safe mode with netowrking just "Safe Mode". Run the Spyware Doctor program and see if there are any vundo traces left over. If not then you are vundo free and good to go. Please keep in mind that Spyware Doctor may find many other spyware and adware programs on your system. If this is the case you really should consider buying the program to remove all the spyware on your system and not just the vundo one. if the scan finds nothing then you are good to go and have no imediate need to purchase anything because you are not infected.
After thoughts: You should not run more then one anti-virus and one anti-spyware program on your computer. If you purchased spyware doctor you should remove spybot. If you do not want to purchase spyware doctor then un-install is and use the free Tea-timer program that spybot has. This is not as good but at least it is something.
If you have no anti-virus or spyware program then you really need to get something. The best out there are Spyware Doctor with Anti-virus and Trend Mirco. These are the best that I have come acroos. Trend Micro is a little bit of a system resoure hog but does a great job. If you have an older or already slow computer then Spyware Doctor with anti-virus is the better way to go.
